It's coming! The Smithsonian Institution has broken ground on the 20th Smithsonian Museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The groundbreaking ceremony was hosted by Phylicia Rashad (HU!) and was attended by President Obama, as well as several other prominent African American figures.
I'm am so excited! That is all.
I'm not sure if any one remembers the post I did a while back about the First Ladies Exhibit at the National Museum of American History, but since then I've been in love with the Smithsonian Institution. I visit their museums on the regular. I read articles from Smithsonian Magazine Online; I even have their app on my iPod Touch.
It makes me so proud the the Smithsonian Institution is going to take on the responsibility of creating such a necessary entity. The NMAAHC is currently a gallery within the American History Museum but will soon will it's own building on the National Mall. The unfortunate part is that the building will not be completed until 2015! (Aka an eternity from now!) I realize its only three years but in my world that might as well be eternity.
However, I'll be patiently waiting and I will, if necessary, make a trip back to D.C. in order to attend the grand opening. To read all about the National Museum of African American History and Culture's current and future endeavors click here.
